Apex Paving Company, one of the companies operating within Delta Companies Inc., was the successful bidder on an interstate resurfacing project in Scott County, MO.
The Notice to Proceed for this project was issued in mid-March 2021 to upgrade 29 miles of pavement on I-55 in Southeast Missouri. The project consisted of aggregate edge treatment, asphalt paving, cold milling, patching existing roadway, maintenance of traffic, guardrail, rumble strips, and pavement markings.
Six subcontractors and multiple crews milled the existing pavement, placed asphalt paving courses (1.75” mainline and 1.25” shoulders), and installed the aggregate shoulder. The mix for the project was produced at the Cape Girardeau Hot Mix Asphalt Plant.
The paving crew utilized two vibrating rollers for breakdown, one vibrating roller in the middle, and a static roller to finish. The first three rollers had “Intelligent Compaction” technology—a highly accurate GPS, on-board computer reporting system—and infrared thermometers that provided information to help achieve density. The color-coded screen made it easy to count the passes, observe coverage area, and monitor mix temperature.
