In June 2021, Secon, a Colaska subsidiary, successfully completed the Juneau International Airport – Taxiway A Rehabilitation, Taxiway D-1 Relocation, & Taxiway E Realignment project in Alaska.

The project began in March 2020 and consisted of excavation, new structural sections of imported subbase and D-1, cold planing and pavement removal, hot mix asphalt placement, and new lighting.

A reduced flight schedule due to the emergence of COVID-19 allowed for some leniency with the original project phasing. After a three-week delayed start due to freezing temperatures, Secon accelerated the project schedule and consolidated what had been a two-year, 21-phase taxiway rehabilitation project into a one-year, nine-phase project. This proved to be an incredible feat considering the 2021 summer season in Juneau was one of the wettest on record, totaling nearly 34 inches of rain from April to August.

The original design incorporated grades that were too flat, which would have created ponding in many areas and a maintenance hazard in the winter. However, with the state-of-the-art equipment used by Secon and a partnership with the construction administration team, a new design was created, and precise construction methods produced a superior product for the client.

This project’s success was recognized by the Associated General Contractors of America Excellence in Construction Award.
